about
I really love how this turned out. It builds beautifully and the whistle solo at the end is just a cherry on top of an emotional musical sundae. I have this amplifier, it’s older than my mother, and it makes this wonderful whirly vibrato sound… I’ve heard that they only made the circuit for a few years because of how complex it was, and if a part of the vibrato circuit blew, it could damage the entire amp. That sound defines the tone of the track, and it’s also an interesting thing to think about. The whistle was actually an outtake from a vocal pass and the engineer loved so much he left it in. Regarding the backstory of this track, I’d prefer to leave some anonymity; but I will say that I had some family that lived in Virginia, and as I grew up there was some mystery over how certain things within that family transpired. As I grew up and things began to unfold, it brought up questions within me. This song is my best attempt to make peace with that turbulence and reflect upon it.
lyrics
Virginia
What’s a man supposed to do
When he feels there’s no escape
A quick decision that’s been thought about for years
And once it’s made it’s made
The house was swept; we cut the grass
Oh she loved to have us stay
The hills behind her seemed to climb and fall for miles
And before we ate we prayed
I think about that home in Virginia
I think about that rope swing on the beech tree where I swung
I think about that home in Virginia
And I’m gone
There’s a beauty that comes with age
And it’s humble and it’s kind
Earned through a stubborn will and a faith in the unseen
And what’s been left behind
I’d like to know what made him leave
And if that thing’s in me
I believe that every battle that isn’t won
Is passed down the family tree
I think about that home in Virginia
I think about that rope swing on the beech tree where I swung
I think about that home in Virginia
And I’m gone
